A magical time at Santa’s Grotto

Open Sesame!

Whoosh!

The magical door opens. And I am transported back to my childhood…and to the enchanted winter wonderland that I so much loved and enjoyed.

I am six years old. My woollies hug me as I toss aside the pompom of my cap that annoyingly obstructs my view of Santa’s grotto.

Eyes wide, mouth agape, I then enter. The awesome majesty of the scene very nearly bowls me over. I steady myself and gasp at the beauty of it all.

Silver tinsel, red and white toadstools, and tiny golden bells polka-dot the snowflake white scenery.

Wee lights, psychedelic, charmingly wink; the stars, a myriad, shine their sparkle on either side of the winding pathway.

Bunches of holly  and mistletoe prettily twine the poles.

Now and then I read a sign: “Make a wish and pull the string.” Indeed I do!

Tinkling bells echo as wishes are granted.

Fairies twirl their wands, blessing everyone.

Elves are seen loading sacks of presents on to the sleigh.

Ever so softly and most joyfully, familiar tunes of the festive season start to play.

Winter sits on the garden bench. Icicles hang strategically, brrr. Oh, such fascinating sights!

Nearby a little red robin perched up high, trills heartily.

I join other children shriek in delight when a sudden snowflake shower comes fluttering down.

Big grins appear on our faces as we realise that we’re soon to meet the big man himself.

Quickly, I mentally go over my list – which is always long – just to make sure I’ve not forgotten anything.

Then..

The reindeer appear…

Dasher,

Dancer,

Prancer,

Vixen,

Comet,

Cupid,

Donder,

Blitzen,

and, finally….Rudolph.

I walk on.

Excited, hugely.

Thrilled, enormously.

Tickled pink, oodles.

I accelerate my walking tempo. Hup-2-3-4.

Soon, Santa’s much loved elves smilingly receive all us youngsters, and we approach, rather nervously, with sweaty palms…

We’re at the end of the tour, and there, behind the magnificently decorated Christmas tree, stands dear Santa!

“Ho! Ho! Ho!”

Treasured memories of a most wonderful childhood spent in Winter Wonderland. I am indeed blessed!
