Birds! .. à la Hitchcock

The day began as any normal weekend. Sun was shining, the palm trees swayed gently, and, as I looked out of the window, I smiled.

Why was I smiling?

Oh, for no special reason. I just felt happy and positive. Actually, to be honest, my yoga guru’s instructions were abuzz in my ear.

I was told.. Stay happy. Stay positive. Keep a strong mind. Be poised and remain calm. Breathe. Just breathe.

Mantras ruled my mind. Love and Light. Think Peace. Breathe.

So I did just that. I didn’t go berry picking. Nor did I go sheep shearing. I just breathed.

Inhale. Exhale. Relax.

THUD!” – Oh!!

Suddenly, my concentration – well, sort of, focus – was rudely interrupted.

I turned to look in the direction from where the sound came.

I saw that a bird had hit the window pane. Gosh, the noise scared me out of my wits; shocked me into shivers. Totally.

Huh. So much for my mantra – “be poised and calm” and “keep a strong mind”….duh. Sorry, yogi. No can do.

Anyhow.. I squished my nose delicate nose against the window, and with a Miss Marple-like air, I sought an answer. Why did the feathered little fella behave in such a bizarre manner? Pourquois?

But, alas, the mystery remained a mystery. Then, more sounds, most eerie, were heard. This time, the Hercules Poirot in me was intrigued. He I listened.

Many birds – crows – screeched to high heaven. The terrifying noise numbed my senses. Yet aroused my sense of curiosity. So, out I went.

Courageously, I strode into unexplored territory, where no man dared to tread. Nah. Just kidding. I actually went out into the back yard. Haha.

The outside hot air hit me in the face, as I stepped on to the paved pathway that led to the back of the house.

Why were the crows shrieking their silly little heads off? I wondered.

Caw! Caw! Caw! Their shrills echoed all around.

Bravely, I walked on.

With my brows furrowed, lips puckered, the imagination played helter-skelter in my mind. Deep in thought I was when, like a bolt out of the blue, someone (or some thing) viciously bashed me at the side of my head.

Stunned. Shocked. I let out a silent scream.

Boggled and bewildered, I was still trying to figure out what had happened when my head received another unceremonious bash. Oh!

Dazed. Confused. I stood there, stuck to the ground. Glued to the spot. Ashen-faced, dry mouthed and in utter shock.

Only when I heard the extreme upping of the tempo of bloodcurdling shrieks, did it dawn upon me that I was under attack. Yes! A vicious attack. The flying brigade was out to get me – how wicked! The crows. Birds! Aargh.

Needless to say, no Mr Hitchcock came to the rescue. Sacré bleu! Sigh. Mais oui, the poor pale-but-interesting, petite damsel in distress, had to fend for herself. Mon Dieu. Is chivalry dead?

But I digress. A million apologies, mesdames et messieurs.

Pronto, I did a sharp u-turn. Then, skedaddled. With a heart beating rapidly, palms, sweating profusely, and, yes, eyes, popping out in fear, I paused, for a split second, to quickly snap off a bit of twig – my weapon – to twirl above my head, so to ward off the enemy.

Yeah. Hatari! I’m armed to the teeth. Eat your heart out, Danny boy 007.

Good thinking, girl. You rock! So, I patted myself on the back.

Finally, I reached the door. Phew.

It was with utter relief that I entered the safety of the hallowed indoors.

My home sweet home. Ah. I leant against the door. So grateful.

Lesson learnt. Point taken.

No more sleuthing, old gal.

No more investigating, Mal.

…….. Because,

There are birds out there!
Birds, mummy, birds!
Changes are shifting outside,
Birds are behaving crazy.
There are monsters out there,
Uh-huh, monsters, crazy monsters.
No more “I love birds”, no way,
Changes are shifting outside.
Crows – birds, no more “I love you’s”
That is for sure!

With my kind regards (and thanks) to Annie Lennox. 😊

I’m a flower-happy kinda gal!

From childhood I have loved flowers. I remember visiting parks, botanical gardens, florists and just taking in all the splendid sights and fragrances. What joy!

You might just say that I’m a flower-happy kinda gal!

Indeed, I’m one among the many who adore them. No matter how blue one’s feeling, simply look at flowers and your whole world turns pink and rosy.

So it is no wonder we give flowers to those who are sick. A hospital room appears more cheerful with floral arrangements placed by a window or on a shelf.

Of course, new mommies and babes are embraced with flowers galore.

Ailing children are given a warm hug with pretty blooms.

Beautiful bouquets are graciously presented to friends as they settle in their new home , adding much to their happiness.

On her big day, a bride clutches a bunch of flowers, enhancing the beauty of her bridal gown. An Eastern bride entwines fragrant flowers in her hair, and sits atop a tastefully decorated stage , displaying exquisite blooms.

Birthdays are yet another occasion for flowers. Roses are popular. Just one or a whole bunch of them are, equally, heartily accepted. After all, it’s the thought that counts!

Say it with flowers. Brighten up mum’s day. Thank a sibling for always being there. Appreciate a colleague. Value a neighbour, a friend, a spouse. Certainly, the language of flowers is understood by all. N’est-ce pas?

Take a peek at some of my favourite quotes on flowers…

“The earth laughs in flowers.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

“The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks.”

~ Tennessee Williams, Camino Real

“I must have flowers, always, and always.”

~ Claude Monet

Yes, my thoughts exactly!

Grateful I am for the blessings! Life is packed with them, look around you. Certainly, His grace surrounds us. Pause. Reflect. Observe.

I am grateful for the sunshine in my garden. The flowers are blooming and prove His wondrous ways by which He blesses us.

This flower is just one of my many, many blessings. Note its beauty, its magnificence and its shape.

Blessings come in different ways. Think about it. Ponder a while. Become aware. And be thankful.

I am grateful for even the ups and downs for they have made me the person I am. The lows have strengthened my faith and made me a better person. The highs have made me humble and I bow in gratitude to the Almighty.

Yes, I am grateful. Grateful for…

my parents

my sister

my brother

my aunts

my uncles

my nephews

my nieces

my cousins

my friends

and last but not least, I am so, so very grateful for my children…my darling daughter and my darling son. May God forever bless you and keep you safe.

I am indeed blessed!

Thank You, God.

12.12.12

Today is 12.12.12 –  the last of the repeating dates this century. People the world over are celebrating this significant date, and commemorating it with special events. But one boy has something extra special to celebrate.

Corey Smith will celebrate a momentous coincidence as he turns 12 at 12 today – 12.12.12. Born in 2000 at 12 noon, this young boy awaits the incredulous moment. Wow.

As we make note of this day, let us take a minute to reflect on life. Young or old, we are happy to be alive. We are thankful to Him for this day…for all the blessings we have enjoyed. Certainly, we are grateful for even the ups and downs because they have made our journey all the more interesting.

Adversities make us stronger. The knocks and tumbles are there to steer us and direct us in the right direction. Friends and family give us the love and support to help us overcome such obstacles. We give gratitude for our parents…God bless them for their unconditional love.

With strong faith and deep trust in Him, hurdles are cleared and barriers broken down. We need not worry for an answer to our prayers. Just have patience and always remember He is near: “Trust in My timing for My timing is perfect. Just let Me do My job.” When the moment is right, it will happen.

Agreed, the climb can be tough; the tumble, rough. All the waiting and being patient is too trying. But getting through it all is reason enough to celebrate the new YOU – the more confident, capable and compassionate YOU. Compassionate? Yes. Since after having experienced similar trials and tribulations, one becomes more understanding and caring of others’ feelings.

On this day, let the universal spirit of togetherness unite everyone, irrespective of caste, colour or creed and let there be more tolerance, patience and forgiveness in the world.

Today, may you have luck and laughter on your side; may health and happiness be yours, and, if it snows, go out and build yourself a merry little snowman – Happy 12.12.12!

… And now, the following is a post especially written for my friends who are living where the temperatures are freezing; where the thick blanket of snow has enveloped their environment and icy frost and sleet hail down upon them.
